Brooke Edwards Giving Me Delicious Recipes (And talking about Sweet Dreams)

sweetdreamsbanner

Hello All!

When Brooke Edwards told me what her story was about, mainly cute guys and food, I was excited. As anyone who knows me knows, food is probably my biggest obsession after books and writing. I asked her if she could send me a blog post with recipes in it, and she did not disappoint. I will definitely make these foods this weekend if I can, and post pictures afterward!

There is also an excerpt of her novella below, because that is what we’re here for. Not my extreme love of everything gustatorially related.

Thanks so much for being here Brooke.

Happy reading!

Thank you, Kiyle, for the chance to talk about my new release AND have a chat about one of my favourite topics – food. This was a huge part of Sweet Dreams as it was such a major part of Benji’s life and it was a really easy way for me to connect with him. I spent many hours as a child sitting up on the counter while my granddad tried to avoid my accusing gaze whenever he poured wine into whatever he was cooking. Oh, the innocence of childhood! We won’t talk about how much wine I use in MY cooking. There was enough Chambord soaking the cake in my Christmas trifle back in December that everyone stayed just a little bit longer than planned to make sure they were safe to drive.

Benji probably wouldn’t have supported it, but I’m pretty sure Cara and Dane definitely would have been on board. It’s a good thing for Benji’s sanity that Cara took off globetrotting before Dane came crashing into his life, I think. Back on topic, though, and into the real meat of the matter. My parents raised me to always finish my dinner if I even wanted a peek at dessert, so I’m going to talk a bit about one of my favourite comfort foods. Lasagne is a staple for lots of families, I know, and lots of people have their special tricks or ingredients that make it theirs. My tricks are a visit to the antipasto bar at the local delicatessen and home-roasted garlic cloves – I pack a tub full of semi-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, seared eggplant slices and pickled roasted pepper slices and lay those through each layer. It’s a great way to beef up a sauce if you don’t want meat in it, and if you do have meat in it then you’ve got an even heartier sauce. However you make your sauce, whether it’s from a jar or from scratch, I think it’s incredibly important to simmer all the ingredients together to combine them properly. Adding a can of crushed tomato to whatever sauce you have in a jar is always a surefire way to make it richer. I like to cook some onions in a little butter when I brown the mince before tossing the two together with a generous sprinkle of salt and cracked pepper and some crushed roast garlic, then pouring the sauce in and letting it simmer for a while. I know that some people love it, but I don’t make my lasagne with a béchamel sauce. I layer it with pasta sheets, a thick spreading of the sauce and then a generous handful of grated cheeses. Sharp cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan are my three regulars. As long as your top layer has a solid coating of cheese, you’re golden.

No meal would be complete without dessert, and as a special shout-out to Kiyle, I wanted to share some baked doughnut recipes. There are SO many variations on the baked doughnut thing online that you could literally spend days lost in a Pinterest spiral. Pretty sure that’s happened to Benji a time or two, although croquembouches are more his thing. Bring on the cream puffs, am I right? Anyway – baked doughnuts. If you want to Google a basic baked doughnut recipe, there are SO many online that are really versatile. You can add berries, or flavour them in a million different ways. Dunk them in melted chocolate or fill them with salted caramel, it really is incredibly hard to go wrong with doughnuts. Today, I’m going to talk to you about one of MY favourites. Apple Pie Doughnuts.

Quick rundown on the ingredients: you’re gonna need puff pastry, apple pie filling, brown sugar, butter, some crushed biscuits (Australians should use Digestives, Graham crackers for Americans or whatever biscuit you’d use to make a crumble top or cheesecake base) an egg wash and whatever you want for toppings. Some people like caramel sauce and icecream, others like fluffy whipped cream, some people like them on their own with a big glass of milk. I make my pie filling from scratch – diced or sliced Granny Smith apples, brown sugar, vanilla extract, lemon juice, cinnamon and nutmeg all over low heat and thickened with a little cornflour. Canned pie filling will do the job just as well for these purposes though! Roll it out and cut your puff pastry into rounds – 2 rounds per doughnut. Lay out your base layers on a parchment lined baking sheet and top each one with a big spoonful of your pie filling. (Protip – sugar lovers might want to drizzle some of that caramel sauce through the inside too) Brush some of your eggwash around the edges, put another pastry circle on top and pinch the edges until you have a nicely filled and sealed doughnut. Sift some of your brown sugar through the crushed biscuits and mix with melted butter until you have a nice crumbly mixture. Brush finished doughnuts with egg wash and sprinkle with your crumble. Baking time will depend on the size of the doughnuts and your oven – puff pastry is pretty telling when it comes to being done. Golden and flaky is ideal, I find that mine usually take around 15-20 minutes. Once they come out of the oven, let them cool off while you debate with yourself over what you want on top (or whether you’re gonna share them at all) and then you’re in for a really good time. On that note, and speaking of a good time, I hope you enjoy this exclusive excerpt!

Dane waltzes in again after three weeks of nonstop texting, flirting and interrogations about “why you’re smiling like a teenager with a new porn stash” from Sienna. It’s Saturday afternoon, right before close, and the only reason Benji knows that the figure coming through the door is Dane is the fact that he’s wearing an orange beanie almost identical to the one he stole from Glen’s head the first day they met, sunglasses and a bright violet NYU hoodie. He looks ridiculous and Benji starts laughing the second he puts the tray of tarts down.

“You missed blending in half a mile back that way,” he says in lieu of a greeting and Dane just grins, wide and bright and plucks the sunglasses off his face when he’s sure they’re alone. Dane locks the door behind him with a sense of familiarity that makes the tiny, hopeful part of Benji squirm with joy.

“That may be true but no one expects a celebrity to dress this terribly,” he says with a wink and with the full force of that grin on him for the first time in weeks, Benji gets a little weak in the knees. The tight, lingering hug that comes after makes him decidedly wobbly on his feet but it’s nothing compared to the butterflies that fill his insides when Dane casually presses a kiss to the corner of his mouth like that’s something they’ve done a thousand times before. Benji still hasn’t managed to get a word out by the time Dane has crossed to the apron rack and fastened the bikini apron around his waist again, turning around with an expectant look on his face and a glint in his eyes.

“So,” he says and Benji blinks. “What’s on the list for tonight?”

Benji glances at the list pinned to the board. “Uh, a bunch of cakes for some business function.”

Dane rubs his hands together as he steps right into Benji’s space. Benji looks at him, eyes wide, and Dane smiles so wide that the corners of his eyes crinkle. “Better get on with it,” he says, brushing up against Benji on his way to the bench. “I was hoping we’d be home in time for Saturday Night Live.”

Benji sucks in a surprised breath. There’s really no alternative meaning to that statement and if that’s where they’re heading without having to have some big emotional reveal or conversation about it, he is so down with it. He has no plans, Sienna scheduled to oversee pickup for the cakes the next day with the business function. Everything seems to have lined up perfectly.

“We can take these leftovers, right?” Dane asks as Benji carefully closes the refrigerator on the completed cakes a few hours later, not able to drag his eyes away from the pile of cake shavings and excess decoration. He licks his lips. “And that frosting stuff. The chocolate one?”

Benji, in the middle of untying the horrible knot he ends up with every time he wears the old blue apron, considers rolling his eyes before he thinks about what they can do with the ganache. The image of Dane licking his lips flashes across his eyes again and once that reality settles in his mind he nods fervently.

“Yes, we can take the ganache,” he says, slightly manic. His fingers tear right through the old, worn string and he wriggles his way out of the apron without even bothering to hang it up.

Sweet Dreams by Brooke Edwards (Give Away!)

sweetdreamsbanner

Hello Everyone!

Today I have Brooke Edwards here to talk about her newest novella, Sweet Dreams. I have read it and it is a nice, short piece for those rainy afternoons where you want something fun, but maybe don’t want to start an epic length novel.  A word of caution, perhaps don’t read it when you are hungry. (Or, like I did, take a break and make a nice snack to go with it.)

Happy Reading!

Sweet Dreams: The Baker and the Movie Star

Thanks for having me to visit and talk about my new short story! I’d been toying with the idea of self-publishing something for a while and when I wrapped this little piece up and it ended up with nowhere to go, I decided it deserved to head out into the world. Dane and Benji, my MCs, were such fun characters to write and a fluffy love story was such a nice change from the angst that dominated my last novella.

For such a short, happy piece, it wasn’t completely without emotional significance. I dedicated it to a lovely lady, V, who came into my life at a really low point. I was struggling with health issues that doctor after doctor just kept telling me were all in my head and everything was crumbling around me as a result. Much like Cara does with Benji, she took me under her wing and opened up a whole new world. Cakes and desserts were nothing new, but the possibilities she showed me absolutely blew my mind. With some spare time up my sleeve, a lot of guidance and SO many hours of practice and patience, I grew my own cake-decorating wings. Sadly, V’s own health issues took a turn for the worst a couple of years back and she needed to stop teaching and creating as it was taking too much of a toll on her physically. Although it’s been a long time since we’ve been in a studio together with buttercream and fondant, I still consider her my guardian angel and fairy godmother in a lot of ways. I can’t give V enough credit for what she did for me and my emotional well-being during that time. I bought her a lot of magnets during my overseas trip last year but they don’t even come close to compensating!

A lot of Benji’s relationship with Cara came from everything that V represented for me. The loss of his grandmother and the disruption of his life, especially being a teenager, left him drifting. She helped smooth out those jagged edges that were left behind, and led him to a new passion that gave him purpose, one that honoured the memory of his grandmother too. When Cara moved on too, although Benji had his family and a reason to get out of bed every morning, he lacked any real fire or excitement. He was just plodding along before Dane came crashing through the door and brought Benji’s predictable routine to a sudden, explosive halt. The disparity between their lifestyles was such a huge thing that I spent a long time staring at the screen saying “Are you sure this is a thing that’s going to work? The baker and the movie star?” Luckily, the rational part of me never really gets much playtime so Dane’s insistence that YES, he definitely wanted to pursue the cute baker who saved him from the rabid fans, won over. He wanted to do it in a way that didn’t give said cute baker any time or opportunity to run away from all the complicated tangles that dating an A-list celebrity could bring about, too. Benji got swept up in his thrall, pushed along by that tiny voice inside of him that was so hungry for adventure and change. A combination of Cara and his grandmother, I think that voice just wasn’t taking no for an answer.

I’m not going to even pretend to say that their story ends when I ended Sweet Dreams because I’m pretty sure there are some obstacles they’re going to have to get through before that happily ever after comes along, but I liked the hopefulness they both had after winning Sienna’s grudging approval and it felt like a good place to end things for now. Much as this feels like a good place to end my rambling. Drop your email addresses and your preferred reading format below if you’re interested in a free copy of Sweet Dreams, Kiyle and I will select a winner after 24 hours!

The Cover for Trust Trade…Revealed!

Hello Everyone!

Overall, this has been a rather fantastic week. I got to see a good friend who lives out of town, my wee imps are off to spend time with Sugar Plum’s mother (giving me valuable writing/present wrapping time), and Erie, my wonderland by the lake, is scheduled to be buried under about 2 feet of snow.

Who doesn’t love FEET of snow? (I would be a lot more excited if I had cross country ski equipment, but we can’t get everything all the time.)

My kids will be ecstatic to try to build a snowperson. I would say a “snowman”, but honestly I’m pretty sure lumps of snow aren’t gender specific, and even if we did want to get all Michelangelo with it, I have a feeling our fingers might freeze off before we got anything more than a round bottom and …well, I’ll be real…it will be a big ball with sticks jammed into it, most likely.

We shall make snow blobs and put hats on them.

I’m lazy. Sue me. But they aren’t big enough to do more than cursory snow patting while I push around the big mound of snow.

Ah…distracted, anyway, this week is one of the best weeks ever because I finally got the COVER for Trust Trade, my newest book!

Check it out!

While you’re waiting for the release date on January 27th, why don’t you check out some of my other books. Threefold Love is M/M/M if that’s up your ally (also was a Rainbow Award Runner Up last year in 2 categories). The Paranaturalist is …well, paranatural. I like it. If werewolves are you thing, The Shape of Honey is pretty good, though be warned, there is a female POV in that one that some people aren’t a fan of.

I can’t wait for the release date on Trust Trade because I’m currently perfecting the draft of another book in the Gem City Grit world, tentatively called Love It Like You Stole It, but I’m not entirely wedded to that title, so don’t imbed it in your memory yet. I’m also in the process of rough drafting a third book in the Gem City Grit world…so, there’s definitely more to… come.

I just laughed at myself there…I think I need a nap, or bed, or something.

Have a wonderful night!

Release Day for The Paranaturalist and Blog Tour Info

I’m very excited to have made it this far on this book. It has been a long haul. The Paranaturalist isn’t like my magical first two books that were accepted by the publisher without any questions. This one had to be rewritten. I cried over it and sweat over it and at the end of the day and I think it was much better for all that work.

Happy reading!

The Paranaturalist

As a kid, Joseph Appleyard saw things hidden from others. Now he is The Paranaturalist, an investigator and cohost of a television show that seeks to prove the existence of the paranormal. Some think Joe is crazy, but they don’t realize he knows firsthand there’s more to the world than what most perceive. The trouble is, somewhere along the way, Joe lost his vision and it left his world flat and dull. One night an investigation goes horribly wrong, and a powerful ghostly manifestation sends Joe tumbling into a river. Spirit worker Owen Watson saves Joe’s life, and once they are back on dry land, whatever has been blocking Joe’s vision has been washed away.

When a haunting goes from annoying to dangerous, people turn to Owen Watson. He hates those infuriating hacks from TV, but when he pulls Joe from the river, his mind begins to change. Joe is scared and confused, and Owen realizes he might just be the real thing. Together, they work to understand the part of Joe that has been shut away for so long. But just as Joe is reacclimating to his abilities, his career as a paranormal investigator is in danger of being ripped away. Owen would gladly battle a bloodthirsty spirit for Joe, but he’s out of his element in the world of reality television.

Inspiration and Ideas

A question I’m asked a lot by non-writers (and sometimes by writers as it seems my ideas can be… odd…) is: Where do you get your ideas? Especially when they heard about Dreamers’ Destiny. It’s not exactly paranormal, but it does skirt that line in places, after all.

Where do I get my ideas…? In general, from life. In specific, Dreamers’ Destiny came out of a challenge from a friend of mine who wanted to see if I could write a story that had a dream weaver (pagan) without it going into Harry Potter’s world—his words, not mine. So, I thought and thought and wrote Signs of Desire and Desires’ Pride and then sat down and wrote Dreamers’ Destiny once I thought I had a handle on Liam and Cameron.

Haha. Liam is easier to control, mostly. Cam is… well… Cam.

My mind whirled and spun with the guys banging around in the background no matter what else I did until I wrote their story. I pulled ideas from life, from stories I heard, from my experiences as a Wiccan priestess in my RL, etc.

From there, things evolved and snowballed until the story was born onto the page.

I’m the type of author that lets the characters have control, mostly. I know the basic plot, but I don’t “plot” as I’ve found that my characters tend to take that as a challenge to see how much they can not cooperate. I do keep a ton of little notes as I write (thank you Scrivner!) about the plot, people, places, cars, etc. The real challenge comes when I first go to combine them all together into an interesting story.

So where do I get my ideas? From everywhere, within and without. Life is the greatest inspiration, whether it be mine or another’s is irrelevant. You might just be what inspires me next!

Excerpt

Liam walked beside Cam, noting every nuance of the man he’d been with most of his life, even if they’d never met while awake before. He was entranced with how Cam moved. He thought of the way Cam had spoken using his hands to emphasize and punctuate his voice when they were inside the tattoo shop, and even the little sidestep to separate them didn’t surprise or bother Liam any. Liam had expected it, truthfully, but he’d needed to feel Cam, to know he wasn’t imagining all this, either—that fleeting touch in the tattoo shop hadn’t been nearly enough.

Working with Nosha the last couple of weeks had been interesting, and he’d started to believe Cam might be real. However, seeing and touching Cam was very different from trying to willfully take control of his dreams or debating Cameron’s possible existence. And touching him? Liam suppressed a shiver as he opened the door for Cam to enter the little coffee shop.

“Thanks,” Cam murmured. “You always do things like this in the dreams too,” he added so softly Liam almost missed it.

Liam smiled, hoping Cam could adjust to this new knowledge and glad he’d noticed how Liam acted both in their dreams and now.

Thankfully, it wasn’t busy right then, so they got their coffees and were seated at the farthest table from the other patrons in a few minutes. Liam waited, watching Cam as he fidgeted with his cup, steadfastly refusing to meet Liam’s eyes.

Liam cleared his throat and asked, “Will you look at me, please?”

Cam raised his head slowly before finally meeting his gaze. “I don’t understand how you’re here. You’re supposed to only exist in my head. Well, in my dreams, anyway.”

Liam chuckled, thinking of how he’d made the same argument with Di and Nosha not that long ago about his seeing Cam at the club. “I’m still not entirely certain how all this works, but I’m quite real. As are you, it seems.”

The silver eyes before him flashed a moment before Cam snorted softly, then smiled, almost. “Why don’t you seem more, I don’t know, upset? I mean, this should be just as much of a shock for you as it is for me. Or do you go around invading people’s dreams and doing all those things with others you do with me all the time?”

He blinked hard as he thought about what to say and which questions to even answer.

Spinning, spinning, spinning, every touch of breeze

As we meet inside our dreams, our hearts beat as one

Dancing, dancing, dancing, above the clouds of white

Awaken to my loving touch, a smile to fill your soul

Hello, world.

It’s difficult to find yourself, to find your voice, to learn just who you truly are.  In most cases, we will never find out the entirety of those truths.  I’ve been writing for quite a bit of time—so long so that it seems I have never been without a story in my mind—and only recently do I seem to have located my feet.

I am Sera Kane, I do have feet, and I wrote a novella for you.

Lord of Hearth, Lord of Hollow is the story of two men—one human, one not—who must discover more about themselves in order to overcome their pasts.  Yet those pasts are more entwined than either could have predicted.  As I explored the world and characters of Aimes and Keane, it was so easy to try to second guess myself time and time again.  But they knew themselves far better than I.  When I got out of their way, they gladly shared their world and now, we can extend it to you, dear reader.

You don’t need your feet, only your eyes and heart.  Please join Aimes and Keane as they discover the possibilities of their world.

Culinary school is hard enough for Aimes Cully without mixing in an utterly underwhelming physical appearance—too small, too delicate, too red-haired, too freckled, too human—added with the inability to magically improve the food—still too human—and facing the too beautiful, too fae-looking Aleksi’s teases and taunts. When rumors surface that Aimes’s older brother’s success is a lie, Aimes is determined to prove them wrong and show that pure-blooded humans are the equal of anyone with mixed blood.

But things get worse after Aimes is caught in a faerie ring and transported to the fae hollow of Lord Keanewyeth Ordorial. As the attraction heats up, it becomes obvious that there’s something wrong in the magical home. A cursed creature appears, and everything becomes jumbled as the secrets of their lives collide into a painful concoction of Aimes’s past and Keanewyeth’s present. But if they can meld their talents, they might be able to save each.

magic

Step and hop on cloudy night,

Out again afore moon’s soft light.

Else a price that must be paid;

The lord’s commands are all obeyed.

A molasses pause filled the room, thick and oozing. It was a silence that spoke of the dark curse: Double. Dog. Dare.

Aimes held his breath, eyes focused firmly on Aleksi’s grim and angry face. He knew better than to push the teacher’s pet. He knew better than to open his big, stupid mouth and do the one thing his older brother had warned him against doing ever. You could never be too careful when you were too human. Those with fae blood would always come down harder on those without, so the Cullys had to be better. Be smarter, braver, and more creative. That’s why Markl had kept trying until he was accepted at the palace. That was why Aimes had to make it to the palace, too.

“If you’re such a know-all-fae,” Aleksi announced with all of the dramatic flare of a ringmaster about to bring out the dancing flame wraiths, “then you can just go get some fairy mushrooms tonight. And then you can make your ‘oh, so famous’—” Aleksi punctuated the words with air quotations so sarcastic that a few of their fellows grimaced at the taste of them. “—Faerie mushrooms for Madame LeBanch tomorrow.”

Aimes took in a swift, tremulous breath. He could still get out of this. All he had to do was cut in with a scathing remark now, something that would cut Aleksi’s legs right out from under him, before he had a chance to invoke….

“I double-dog dare you.”

The curse settled over the class like a blanket. Aleksi’s cronies tittered in delight while his rivals watched in disgusted shock. It was a waste of a curse, especially on a nonentity like Aimes. Humans didn’t have the innate magic to effectively challenge a curse, and especially not one as complex as a named dare. Aimes wouldn’t be able to turn the curse back on Aleksi because fae blood always trumped human blood. The reminder of his ineptitude stung.

Aimes clenched his fists, and his pale chin came up sharply. “All right,” he said, trying to pretend that this high-pitched thing was the normal sound of his voice. “I accept.”

About the Author

Sera Kane has loved the written word for essentially forever, in this particular case, somewhere in the range of thirty years or so.  She writes to share the fantastical things that go on in her mind on a daily basis.  Her secret-but-not-so-secret desire is to write pieces that are impossible to put down.  And, also, to kill off a beloved character.  She has not succeeded at either of these things, but be warned that she wants to!

She currently lives in southern California, but she’s been quite a few places in her day!  Her favourites include Washington– the state, not DC– Texas, and Japan.  Her house is filled by an exceedingly tall husband, a very swift son, a derpy German Shepherd, and a grumpy yet loving Shih-Tzu.  If she ever won the lottery, she’d have houses in all three of those places and breed Shepherds in at least one of them.

Captain Xavier Hobbs, a decommissioned combat engineer, was chronically lonely in the Army. But once he is back to being a civilian, with no family and nothing to ground him, he drifts. All he wants is a real home, a real life, and love—but that is easy to wish for and hard to make happen.

When he meets Andrew Landry, a high school English teacher, Xavier thinks he has found everything he has ever wanted, maybe even someone he can trust with his scars–the ones on his mind and body. Andrew’s quick wit and outgoing personality reel Xavier in slowly but surely. But he isn’t certain which way Andrew swings, and doesn’t dare to do more than hope the friendly man is actually flirting.

Then, on what Xavier idly wishes were their first date, disaster strikes in the form of Duncan McNeil, a fellow Wiccan and Andrew’s fiancé. Xavier’s hope is smashed to pieces, but Duncan and Andrew may have a different point of view. All they need is a little magic, some hope, and a lot of love to put everything back together.
