Sweet Dreams by Brooke Edwards (Give Away!)

Hello Everyone!

Today I have Brooke Edwards here to talk about her newest novella, Sweet Dreams. I have read it and it is a nice, short piece for those rainy afternoons where you want something fun, but maybe don’t want to start an epic length novel.  A word of caution, perhaps don’t read it when you are hungry. (Or, like I did, take a break and make a nice snack to go with it.)

Happy Reading!

Sweet Dreams: The Baker and the Movie Star

Thanks for having me to visit and talk about my new short story! I’d been toying with the idea of self-publishing something for a while and when I wrapped this little piece up and it ended up with nowhere to go, I decided it deserved to head out into the world. Dane and Benji, my MCs, were such fun characters to write and a fluffy love story was such a nice change from the angst that dominated my last novella.

For such a short, happy piece, it wasn’t completely without emotional significance. I dedicated it to a lovely lady, V, who came into my life at a really low point. I was struggling with health issues that doctor after doctor just kept telling me were all in my head and everything was crumbling around me as a result. Much like Cara does with Benji, she took me under her wing and opened up a whole new world. Cakes and desserts were nothing new, but the possibilities she showed me absolutely blew my mind. With some spare time up my sleeve, a lot of guidance and SO many hours of practice and patience, I grew my own cake-decorating wings. Sadly, V’s own health issues took a turn for the worst a couple of years back and she needed to stop teaching and creating as it was taking too much of a toll on her physically. Although it’s been a long time since we’ve been in a studio together with buttercream and fondant, I still consider her my guardian angel and fairy godmother in a lot of ways. I can’t give V enough credit for what she did for me and my emotional well-being during that time. I bought her a lot of magnets during my overseas trip last year but they don’t even come close to compensating!

A lot of Benji’s relationship with Cara came from everything that V represented for me. The loss of his grandmother and the disruption of his life, especially being a teenager, left him drifting. She helped smooth out those jagged edges that were left behind, and led him to a new passion that gave him purpose, one that honoured the memory of his grandmother too. When Cara moved on too, although Benji had his family and a reason to get out of bed every morning, he lacked any real fire or excitement. He was just plodding along before Dane came crashing through the door and brought Benji’s predictable routine to a sudden, explosive halt. The disparity between their lifestyles was such a huge thing that I spent a long time staring at the screen saying “Are you sure this is a thing that’s going to work? The baker and the movie star?” Luckily, the rational part of me never really gets much playtime so Dane’s insistence that YES, he definitely wanted to pursue the cute baker who saved him from the rabid fans, won over. He wanted to do it in a way that didn’t give said cute baker any time or opportunity to run away from all the complicated tangles that dating an A-list celebrity could bring about, too. Benji got swept up in his thrall, pushed along by that tiny voice inside of him that was so hungry for adventure and change. A combination of Cara and his grandmother, I think that voice just wasn’t taking no for an answer.

I’m not going to even pretend to say that their story ends when I ended Sweet Dreams because I’m pretty sure there are some obstacles they’re going to have to get through before that happily ever after comes along, but I liked the hopefulness they both had after winning Sienna’s grudging approval and it felt like a good place to end things for now. Much as this feels like a good place to end my rambling. Yulian Volkov is an entrepreneur and lone werewolf who hates the city. At a pack meeting, he learns the only member he’s attracted to is being expelled for crimes unspecified. Yulian strikes a deal with the pack leader to allow Rolly Witten to live on his farm and work in his Meadery. Although enjoying handsome Rolly’s company, Yulian must tread carefully, since Rolly doesn’t trust him and the pack doesn’t acknowledge homosexuality exists. Meanwhile, Yulian stealthily courts Rolly by teaching him the value of his wolf side.

Rolly, who’s known he was gay since he was a teen, has accepted a life of solitude—and a life of crime. He has no desire to relocate. Yet Yulian’s trust in his ability to do honest work builds his confidence. As life is settling well for them, Rolly learns a friend from his old pack had a crush on him, and he’s torn between returning his friend’s feelings or pursuing the budding relationship with Yulian. But that’s not their worst problem. Assassins are trying to take out both wolves, and they need to figure out who wants them dead or all the trust and happiness they’re building together won’t matter.

M/M Veterans Day Scavenger Hunt: Jessie Gin’s Safety in Numbers

MM Veterans Day Scavenger Hunt

Welcome to the MM Veterans Day Scavenger Hunt

Today I am hosting Jessie Gin!

I’m really excited to be taking part in the scavenger hunt, and doubly so to be hosting Jessie! Let’s look at an excerpt of her new book, Safety in Numbers.

“Bros stick together no matter what.”

When Chris and Liam made that promise, they had no idea how important it would become or how it would be tested in the most brutal way. Nine years later, their bond cemented in blood, that relationship is all they have to hold on to.

“No matter what happens, this friendship will be the one constant we can count on.”

When Billy and Owen made that promise, they knew exactly how dangerous the world could be. They survived prison by protecting each other and they survived freedom by holding that promise sacred. Now they want more than just to survive and they want it from the brothers whose bond is as strong as their own.

“We are stronger together than we’ll ever be apart.”

When Owen reaches his breaking point, Chris jumps at the chance to make things right for all of them. With the future in their grasp, will they realize their strength is in their numbers and finally become the family they crave?

Author’s Note: This is NOT a foursome, but the story of two couples that needed to be told together.  This book is also NOT a standalone, these MC’s have been regular and, at times, significant characters in past books since For a Reason.

~Owen’s POV~

He listened, but didn’t hear her coming. Another sound outside made him jump and kick the chair, its loud scrape on the tile floor nearly stopping his heart. Fuck, he needed to get a handle on this. “Lola?”

When she still didn’t come, he figured she was probably upstairs with Jacky. It sucked, but he couldn’t be mad. Jacky needed her more than he did. He just had to think logically and he’d get through this. Logic said even if the dog was upstairs, she would still be barking if someone was too close to the property. Which meant whatever he heard was farther away than he thought or in his head. It could definitely be in his head.

If either of those things were true, then he had nothing to fear. All he had to do was make his feet move and it could be over in less time than it was taking to psyche himself up. He would probably already be at the stairs if he wasn’t such a chicken shit. Yet, no matter how much logic he tried, he remained rooted to the kitchen floor.

That’s how Chris found him a half hour later, his bare feet making no sound as he came to stand in the doorway. Owen had never been more relieved or more embarrassed in his whole life. “Uh, hey, uh, what are you doing up?”

Embarrassment aside, Chris was there and all Owen had to do was cross the room, then they could walk upstairs together. Only his feet wouldn’t move and Chris was too perceptive not to see that he was quite literally frozen in place. “Why didn’t you call me?”

There was no way he was going to admit to needing help for something as juvenile as being afraid of the dark. “For what? I was just going over the presentation for tomorrow.”

“Alone? I heard Colin come up a half hour ago.” Chris came around the table and stepped right into his space. The fear subsided instantly, leaving him feeling weaker in its absence. “I’ve been waiting for you to come up.”

Owen didn’t quite understand what that meant. It had been a week since their date with the kids and nothing had really changed. He still went to sleep alone every night wishing with all his might that he wasn’t. The only thing that changed was that when he woke up from a nightmare, Chris was there to hold him. Was Chris saying he’d been waiting for Owen to come to him or just waiting to hear him pass on the way to his own room? Not knowing was what kept him from just going to Chris first instead of continuing the routine that was wearing on them both.

“I can’t help if you won’t tell me what’s really going on,” Chris said when he didn’t respond.

As logical as that sounded, it was exactly what he didn’t want to do. If he opened that can of worms, Owen didn’t know what would pop out. It didn’t matter that their friends were better for purging their demons, his never needed to see the light of day. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Yeah, Colin went up a little while ago, but I took a few extra minutes to get this shit organized. Red’s OCD is wearing off on me. I can’t stand when my files are mixed up. That’s all. I was just coming up.”

“Really?” Chris didn’t look convinced, but he stepped back. With each step away, more of the fear seeped back in and it was all Owen could do not to grab him with both trembling hands. “Okay, I guess it was my mistake.”

Owen watched Chris’s retreating back and wondered what the hell he was doing. Chris had come for him, had been coming for him ever since his stupid stunt in the gym. Hell, Chris had flat out declared that he wanted a future with him. Did he really have to admit to being afraid of the dark to get that? Why the hell did they all think this was so healthy? All it made him want to do was throw up.

“G’night, Owen,” Chris called back, his voice sounding too far away and Owen realized he already made it to the stairs. What’d that take, five seconds? He was a total loser who couldn’t walk five seconds in the dark.

“Wait! Just…please don’t leave me here.” He didn’t know where the plea came from, but the wave of nausea that followed was too familiar. How pathetic can you be? “Chris…”

Jessie Gin's Safety in Numbers Promo1

I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview Jessie about her book and a little about life as well. I’m always interested in what makes my fellow writers tick. I hope you enjoy the interview!

Who is your favorite character in your newly released book/why?

Jessie G:

Definitely Chris and Owen. They both have such huge demons to overcome and I love a good redemption / healing story. Together they face their demons, working through pasts they didn’t think they’d ever be able to overcome, and they’re truly stronger as a couple. It was a pleasure seeing all of that unfold and to see their changes affect the other characters in the book.

Are there any Easter Eggs or on the sly references to other books in this book?

Jessie G:

Yes, of course! There are references to past and future books in the series and quite a whopper at the end so people know their story is definitely not over!

Frequently my favorite thing pop up in my stories. For example, my favorite meals or shoes. Are any of your personal favorites hidden in the story?

Jessie G:

Definitely. I threw in my family’s love of Publix fried chicken and my adoration for Cuban sandwiches. Those are the cute references. You’ll see other traits of mine throughout my books (some of my characters have OCD, fear of the dark, etc.)

What is your least favorite word?

Jessie G:

Wow, I really had to think about this one. Uhm, I guess cunt. As mad as I’ve never been, it never falls from my lips and is probably the only word that makes me flinch.

What is your personal sex scene pet peeves? For example, I once had someone tell me they hate “the small hand”, when someone’s fingers can’t touch around a penis.

Jessie G:

Odd names to describe a penis (steel rod, Thor’s hammer) or asshole (rosette, rosebud). They make me giggle which takes me right out of the sex scene

What’s your favorite romantic trope?

Jessie G:

Alpha males with “seemingly” not-so-alpha males who wind up being stronger than anyone gave them credit for. I like suspense – government agencies, motorcycle clubs, as well as blue collar workers – auto mechanics, etc.

Give Away! Ends at 2 PM for The Shape of Honey

Give Away! (Please go to the Dreamspinner Press Facebook Page to comment and be included in the drawing!)

I hope everyone is having a good day so far! The Shape of Honey is heavily centered around Yulian Volkov’s meadery. He loves mead, has made it his life, even though as a werewolf it’s extremely difficult for him to get, and almost impossible for him to stay, drunk. Yulian is always curious to know what a person’s favorite drink is because he believes it tells a lot about them as a person, even if they don’t realize it. I have two hard copies of The Shape of Honey to give away! I will pull winners at 2 p.m. and announce them then. To get into the drawing, please tell me below what your favorite alcoholic (or non-alcoholic if you don’t drink) beverage is, and why.

If The Shape of Honey has your interest piqued, there is also mead in my first book, Threefold Love, which is a m/m/m contemporary Paranormal Romance. (And I have two copies of that book to give away as well!)
